The Exorcism Collection

2012 15 Full Arches (inspired by beyonce)

The Exorcism Collection is the result of a some what penetrating close-up on a certain shape, a body posture, that consistently reappears throughout the image bank of history. The project started with my discovery of a tendency, which is the repetition of a woman bending backwards in an arch. I have labelled this posture ”Full Arch” and the hunt for it became the system of my project. Isolated, it is straightforwardly a posture – a posing body – yet created for the spectator’s gaze. It concurrently signals both submission and control. It can be found as early as in ancient Egyptian descriptions of ill women, in illustrations from Greek philosophy and Medieval witch hunting and in religious exorcism of the Devil. The woman in this position can also be found in medical scientific images on how to treat hysteria and female pop stars today use the position seemingly without worrying about this historical analogy. My work consist of hundreds of small drawings and paintings collected in a passe-partout on a museum-like display shelf outlining the historical parallels to contemporary culture.

The Exorcism Collection is an ongoing project, since my archive of the “Full Arch” pose keeps growing. On this page you will see just a minor selection.
